Tracheal transplants debate performed by Paolo Macchiarini in the Karolinska Hospital continues

The debate regarding the ethicality of the tracheal transplants performed by Paolo Macchiarini in the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm continues. A consequence of this controversy has been the resignation of Anders Hamsten as Vice-Chancellor of the Karolinska Institute, the same week that the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences — the body that awards the Nobel prizes — will accuse Macchiarini of using “ethically indefensible working methods”, which in their opinion has created a “crisis of confidence in Swedish medical research” and tarnishes the reputation of one of the most respected scientific centres in the world (read more about Macchiarini scandal HERE). Tracheal transplants debate about the ethicality of Macchiarini’s experiments has again been raised, so the matter has been transferred to an ethics tribunal outside the Karolinska Hospital.  (The Lancet 387; 732, 2016).
