Overestimated embryonic stem cell treatment

This year, an article was published in The Lancet (385; 509, 2015) that referred to the treatment of eye diseases such as age-associated macular degeneration and Stargardt disease (which can cause vision loss and even blindness) with retinal tissue produced from embryonic stem cells. The study had great media impact, in our opinion possibly exceeding its true therapeutic value. In this respect, two recent Letters to the Editor, also published in The Lancet (386;29-30,2015) have show their reservations regarding the findings obtained, both from a clinical point of view and owing to the low power of a phase 1 trial that only includes 18 patients.
