Sterilisation is the most widely used contraceptive method in the United States, as it is highly cost effective. Sterilisation is a contraceptive method with serious ethical difficulties. Be that as it may, it has another objective problem in that it is not necessarily reversible, and so only seems recommendable for those who do not wish to have any more children. This situation, however, is difficult to determine, since the desire to become a parent again can change with time and circumstances, states Fertility and Sterility (Fertility and Sterility 13;1509-1515).
According to data from the “National Survey of Family Growth” in the United States, between 175,000 and 354,000 vasectomies, and between 546,000 and 789,000 tubal ligations were performed annually from 1998 to 2002 (American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, June 2015).
