Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D. (1920-2013), Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Medical Ethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University, was a physician, philosopher, and administrator who is considered one of the “fathers of bioethics.” An esteemed administrator who had been the President of Catholic University (1978-1982), the Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (1983-1989), the Founder and Director of the Center for Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University Medical Center (1991 to 1996), and the Chairman of the President’s Council of Bioethics (2005-2009), Dr. Pellegrino was first and foremost a practicing physician who viewed bioethical issues through the lens of virtue ethics. To learn more about Dr. Pellegrino please visit this PCCB webpage.
A prolific writer, Dr. Pellegrino authored journal articles, books and book chapters, lectures and monographs devoted to medical ethics, bioethics, and his philosophical reflections on the physician-patient relationship. Incredibly generous with his time, Dr. Pellegrino served on several different boards and commissions, lectured and presented, taught classes in both philosophy and medicine, all while maintaining his medical practice.
With such activity comes copious records. Correspondence, class presentations, and even many of the awards given to Dr. Pellegrino were generously donated to the Bioethics Research Library by Dr. Pellegrino and, through continued effort by the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics and his long-time aid Marti Patchell, many more records and materials have been donated since Dr. Pellegrino’s passing.
The Bioethics Research Library at Georgetown University is proud to be the recipient of these donations and is committed to preserving the legacy of Dr. Pellegrino by maintaining these records and materials.
