A theologian recently argued for use of the terms “proportionate” and “disproportionate” instead of “futile” or “non-beneficial” when discussing medical futility disputes.
I think this is a good idea. Indeed, as I have noted that UK courts often prepare balance sheets to help identify and weigh burdens and benefits of treatment.
Burdens > Benefits = disproportionate
Benefits > Burdens = proportionate
