Underage marriage of girls is legalized in Iraq

Underage marriage is legalized by the first time. The government of Baghdad has presented a bill on the family in their parliament is among other things legalizing the marriage of girls of any age, and who can even divorce at 9-years-old to marry another spouse.

From a religious point of view, this law claims to back the strictest precepts of Sharia law, from a Shiite interpretation. Shiites are the largest religious faction in Iraq (published by Adherido 5-IV-2014).
